Long-Qing Chen's group develops phase-field models and software for understanding and predicting stability and evolution of mesoscale structures during electronic, structural, ferroelectric, and magnetic phase transitions of quantum and functional materials and their responses to thermal mechanical, electrical, and magnetic stimuli.

Jinchao Xu's Group

Jinchao Xu's group develops numerical algorithms and solvers, based on finite-element and multigrid methods and implement them, for solving a set of phase-field equations describing mesoscale structural evolution of quantum and functional materials, that will harness the full potential of DOE leadership computing facilities.

Venkatraman Gopalan's Group

Venkatraman Gopalan's group performs ultrafast pump-probe and mesoscale structural imaging experiments of high-quality crystals to provide experimental validation of the predictions on the kinetics of phase transitions and the accompanying mesoscale structural evolution from the phase-field models.

Roman Engel-Herbert's Group

Roman Engel-Herbert's group grows high-quality hybrid Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) thin films of model quantum and functional materials for mesostructural characterization to support the experimental validation of computational models and software.

Ismaila Dabo's group

Ismaila Dabo's group performs density functiobal theory calculations to obtain fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of electronic and structural phase transitions in quantum and functional materials that can be used as input to phase-field simulations of mesoscale structural evolution.
