HESE brings together students and faculty from various disciplines to develop innovative and practical technology-based solutions to address the most compelling challenges facing the developing world and marginalized communities.

HESE students and faculty conduct research in several areas including affordable design, design thinking, social entrepreneurship theory and pedagogy, systems thinking, Food Value Chains (FVCs), post-harvest technologies, telemedicine systems, community health workers (CHWs) and pre-primary healthcare, cellphones, social networks & trust, indigenous knowledge systems, development ethics, grassroots diplomacy, educational technologies, educational assessment tools, women in engineering, and informal lending systems!
